Tea
plantations in Indonesia have been developed since 1860. The improvements
and intensification of the present area of tea estates cover an area
of 53,553 hectares by state owned estates, 62,123 hectares by smallholders,
and 42,310 hectares by private estates Tea production of PT PERKEBUNAN
NUSANTARA VIII plays a significant role over the national tea product
representing 60% of national tea product comes from West Java. West
Java, a beautiful science and fertile volcanic highland with favourable
climatic conditions is most suitable for growing numerous crops among
others : tea. PT PERKEBUNAN NUSANTARA VIII has a total of 24 tea estates,
covering a productive area at 26,980 hectares which represent the largest
area in 6 regencies, namely Sukabumi (2 estates), Bogor (2 estates),
Cianjur (3 estates), Subang (2 estates), Bandung (12 estates), Garut
(3 estates) with overall production of 55,586 tons of made-tea. Tea
production is increasing year by year as result of endless efforts and
accurate management by PT PERKEBUNAN NUSANTARA VIII, such as in planting,
cultivating, plucking system and processing as to win the desirable
quality of the buyers. The tea and cinchona research center located
at Gambung has the share in increasing and improving tea production
and quality.

Quality
standard
There
are two kinds of black tea processing today, namely the orthodox and
the CTC system. Indonesia is one of the biggest orthodox tea producing
country, but as tea marketing today indicates that more and more tea
consumer prefer to have their instant tea with strong taste and dark
colour, teh PT. PERKEBUNAN NUSANTARA VIII has also produced the suitable
CTC tea to meet those demands.
